Subject:  Portrait of a Lady  [Mother]

Artist:  John Downman ARA   [1750-1824] circle

Size:  Oval - painting 11” x 9”   frame 14” x 12”    

Condition:  Very Fine

Frame:   John Downman was a pre-eminent painter of small portraits in the late 18th century and early 19th century.      


He was the son of an Attorney and studied at the RA Schools, then working for a period in the studio of Benjamin West.      


He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected ARA.


He died in Wrexham in 1824 after a very successful career.


This fine portrait of an unidentified elderly lady in oil on copper is attributed to the circle of John Downman because although the style is pure Downman, its provenance is unknown.      


It comes with two other similar portraits of her daughters which are also on this site [adjacent].


It is in very fine condition and is in its original carved frame which has had some minor refurbishment.    


It is not signed.
