He was the son of an Attorney and studied at the RA Schools, then working for a period in the studio of Benjamin West.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected ARA.
He died in Wrexham in 1824 after a very successful career.
This fine portrait of an unidentified young lady in oil on copper and is attributed to the circle of Downman because, although the style is pure Downman, its provenance is unknown.
It comes with a portrait of her mother and her sister which are also offered on this site.
It is in very fine condition and is in its original carved frame which has had some minor refurbishment.
It is not signed.
