Frame:   The frame and its arched inner mount is 20th century and is glazed.


Details:   This beautiful portrait of an unidentified aristocratic lady is by Sir John Gilbert RA..      


He was one of the foremost watercolour artists of his day, eventually becoming Presidnet of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1871 and remaining as such until his death in 1897.     


He was knighted in 1872.

 

He started his career as an estate agent, but changed to painting, originally as an illustrator. He illustrated some 150 books and produced the staggering total of 30000 illustrations for the Illustrated London News.      


But from 1851 he worked almost exclusively in watercolour or coloured chalks, as in this portrait which shows him at the height of his powers.         


It is signed and dated 1851 at bottom left.


The condition is very fine.        


The frame and its arched  inner mount is 20th century and is glazed.
