Details:   This beautiful portrait of an unidentified young lady with ringlets in her hair is by Sir John Gilbert.

He was one of the foremost watercolour artists of his day, eventually becoming President of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1871 and remaining as such until his death in 1897.

He was knighted in 1872.

He started his career as an estate agent, but changed to painting, originally as an illustrator. He illustrated some 150 books and produced the staggering total of 30000 illustrations for the Illustrated London News.

But from 1851 he worked almost exclusively in watercolour or coloured chalks, as in this portrait which shows him at the height of his powers.

It is not signed, but as a pair to the portrait which is signed is fully attributed to Gilbert.

The young lady in question is probably the daughter of the more mature woman.

The condition is very fine. The frame and its arched inner mount is 20th century and is glazed.
